What is a Smartphone? – Definition, Invention, Benefits and More

A smart phone is a hand-held portable unit that integrates computing and mobile phone functions into a single device. These devices have a small screen and various built-in applications. Today Smartphones are equipped with high-end, memory-based processors, digital cameras, video recorders, wireless broadband transmission technologies, and high-speed data transfer rates. The smart phone has a built-in browser with web browsing capabilities and text-to-speech capability.

The Smartphone has the ability to access various forms of media such as SMS, MMS, and E-mail. Along with the advancement in the field of mobile phones, Smartphones have the ability to perform the functions of a personal computer. Smartphones are equipped with an operating system to run various programs. The Smartphone Operating System is not similar to the operating system of a personal computer. This is because Smartphones do not contain the memory, hard drive, and operating system of a personal computer.

Smartphones offer a plethora of features for enabling users to perform tasks quickly and efficiently. Smartphones feature phonebooks, calendar, address book, contact finder, and games that can be downloaded from the Android Market. The smart phone also offers the functionality of a PDA. Smartphones can be customized with various features such as motion sensor, proximity sensor, compass, camera, Bluetooth, and WiFi. There are many brands of Smartphones available in the market and the price of Smartphone varies depending on the brand, features, and usage.

Smartphones are provided with free software and applications and charged at low cost. Smartphones are equipped with high-end processors, digital camera, video recorder, and Bluetooth. The Smartphones come with a large storage capacity and run on advanced processors. Many of the smart phone operating systems are supported by thousands of applications and web browser. The Smartphones run on virtual operating systems such as Linux, Solaris, and Windows.

Smartphones use the Linux operating system and provide an open source code. Android operating system and iPhones use iOS or iPod Touch operating system. The latest addition in the smartphone technology is the Java platform, which provides an embedded application development environment.

Smartphones are capable of syncing data with the server and sending messages to friends and colleagues. Internet usage is enabled with the Smartphone. Some of the Smartphones available in the market are as follows – Fujitsu SGH Pad Minivia Pro, Samsung ION PocketPC, Motorola Defy XT, Sony Ericsson XPERIA Mini Pro, Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc, Sony Ericsson XPERIA Mini Pro, HTC Hero, Nokia E71, LG Optimus Prime, LG Optimus etc. Almost all the Smartphones are equipped with high-end technology and they play the role of a personal organizer, mobile phone, camera, music player, and so on. However, due to the high-end feature of Smartphones there are many companies who sell their phones at affordable rates. The Smartphone is a device of communication that allows us to make our voice, messages, e-mails, photos, files and so on through our Smartphone.
